Why Sump Pump Installation Is Critical for Illinois Homes
Illinois homes are especially vulnerable to basement water problems due to heavy rainfall, clay-rich soil, snowmelt, and fluctuating groundwater levels. Without a properly installed sump pump, water can quickly build up around your foundation and force its way into your basement.
Common problems caused by poor drainage or failing sump pumps include:
- Basement flooding and standing water
- Foundation cracks and structural damage
- Mold and mildew growth
- Damage to drywall, flooring, and stored belongings
- Increased humidity and musty odors
Â
A professionally installed sump pump system actively collects and removes groundwater before it enters your basement, helping prevent costly repairs and long-term damage.

- A pump older than 7–10 years
If you’re unsure, our team can inspect your system and provide honest guidance.
Our Sump Pump Installation Process
Every sump pump installation by Northern Illinois Waterproofing and Construction, Inc. follows a proven, step-by-step process to ensure long-lasting protection and reliable performance.
Step 1: Installing the Perimeter Drain System
The installation begins by removing a section of the basement floor around the perimeter where water intrusion typically occurs. Once the concrete is removed, a layer of clean stone is placed to promote proper drainage.
A perimeter drain is then installed along the wall-floor joint. This drain is designed to collect groundwater and direct it toward the sump pump system instead of allowing it to enter the basement.
Our drainage systems include a wall flange that extends up the basement wall to capture water leaking through wall cracks or porous foundation materials. In homes with concrete block walls, we can drill weep holes to release trapped water and direct it safely into the perimeter drain.
Step 2: Excavating and Installing the Sump Pit Liner
Next, a sump pit is excavated to house the sump pump. The size and depth of the pit are carefully calculated—this is a critical step.
A pit that is too small can cause the pump to cycle on and off too frequently, leading to premature failure
A pit that is too large may pull unnecessary groundwater from deep below the foundation, increasing energy usage
The sump pump is always installed at the lowest point of the basement, ensuring that water naturally flows toward the system during heavy rain or plumbing failures.
A durable sump pump liner is installed to contain water efficiently while preventing soil and debris from entering the system.
Step 3: Sump Pump and Discharge Line Installation
Once the sump pit is in place, the sump pump is installed inside the liner. The pump is positioned on a raised stand to keep it off the bottom of the pit, where mud and sediment can collect.
A PVC discharge line is connected from the sump pump to the perimeter drain system and routed safely away from your home. Clean gravel is placed around the sump pit to discourage debris buildup and improve drainage.
When multiple pumps are installed—such as a primary pump and battery backup—we use separate discharge lines to ensure proper water flow during high-volume conditions.
An airtight sump pump lid is installed to:
- Reduce noise
- Prevent odors and humidity from escaping
- Improve indoor air quality
Step 4: Testing the Sump Pump & Drainage System
After installation, the entire system is thoroughly tested to ensure proper performance. Water is introduced into the drainage system to confirm that it flows efficiently to the sump pump and is discharged safely away from the foundation.
The exterior discharge point is inspected to ensure water is directed to an appropriate location and does not recycle back toward the home.
We also install access ports in the drainage system to allow for future flood testing, maintenance, and system inspections during routine checkups.
Step 5: Finishing the Basement Floor
Once testing is complete, the concrete floor is restored over the drain system for a clean, seamless appearance. Unlike some waterproofing methods that leave open gaps around the basement perimeter, our approach fully seals the floor to prevent debris buildup and maintain a polished look.
Outside the home, the discharge line is buried underground. Our installers carefully remove and replace sections of landscaping to minimize disruption and preserve the appearance of your property.
Step 6: Optional System Upgrades
Once your basement is protected from water intrusion, many homeowners choose to enhance their system with additional upgrades, including:
- Battery backup sump pumps
- High-efficiency basement dehumidifiers
- Waterproof basement wall coverings
- Waterproof basement flooring
- Downspout extensions and exterior drainage improvements
These upgrades further improve basement comfort, usability, and long-term protection.
